Interview with Teenage Bottlerocket

Ray or Brandon, which one is the evil twin?
We're both evil.

How's life on Fat, have you gained weight since getting signed?
Yes, we are a little fatter now, not because we can buy more food, but because we are getting older, and our metabolism just isnt what it used to be.

Why'd you choose pink this time around for the cover colour? (Or is it considered purple?)
Because pink is the new black man! I think we are due for blue though, maybe on the next record. Purple? You're color blind.

Who's ideer was it to use the same cover art each album?
I'm not sure. I think it might have been Brandon. I'll give him the credit, it was Brandons idea.

Is Top Gun everyones favourite movie or wHat?
Haha, that movie pretty much sucks. We quote it all the time though. Thats sort of what lead to us writing a song about it.

Team Holmes or Cruise?
I'm gonna have to go with Cruise on this one, I know nothing about Katie Holmes, is she related to John?

Do you ever get sick of playing old songs from Total? Last time I saw you guys in Toronto you still had a lot of them in your set!
No, we change melodies sometimes on the old songs, just to add a little something. I think the songs have changed a little since Total came out. But to answer your question, no, I love playing all the songs.

What are you looking forward to the most during your touring summer 2012?
I'm looking forward to playing these new songs. Canada is always a blast, I'm stoked to get up there.

Did you ever find out who killed Sensei?
No, we are still on the lookout for that cold hearted bastard. If you hear anything, let us know.

When are you playing Toronto?
August 19th at the Horseshoe.

You’ve been criticized a fair amount for using current pop culture references as lyrical material, how do you respond to dem haterz!?
We're fine with it, Our music isnt for everyone. Skaters gonna skate.

The new promo pic shows Ray Ray without a guitar. Has he wanted to do that for a while or is it only for a few songs?
That guitar is flipped around on my back, you can see the neck sticking out, you're not color blind, youre just blind.

The vocal harmonies on Freak Out are flawless. Whose idea was it to really step up that game for this record? Did it take a lot of practice?
Wow, thanks for noticing, thats really nice of you to point out. We recorded demo versions of these songs and pretty much had everything laid out except the back ups. So the majority of the backing vocals were written and recorded on the spot.

How many songs are stories, and how many are real? It seems like some are pretty from-the-heart. For example, was "Punk House of Horror" inspired by a real place?
Punk House Of Horror was inspired by several different punk houses. Not one in particular, but if you've seen one, you've pretty much seen them all. I hung out at this house in Vincennes Indiana with these crusty dudes. They lost their pet snake in the house. It was missing for about 2 years. Suddenly it showed up again. Your house is pretty fucking messy when a snake goes missing inside it for two years. Alot of the songs are inspired by real shit, Freak Out! is about a specific girl who always goes bananas on me.
